1.Migraine (common neurological syndrome)

A migraine can usually on just one side of the head cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation for hours to days. Its often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.Warning symptoms of migraine is aura may occur before or with the headache. Aura can include flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling on one side of the face or in arm or leg.

Symptoms:
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Depression or euphoria
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Craving for certain food items
  • Altered mood
  • Constipation or diarrhoea
  • Increased urination
  • Stiff muscles (especially in the neck)

Causes:

According to ayurveda, Imbalanced diet and improper lifestyle causes increases of Pitta in the body. In an aggravated state of Pitta disturb digestion, leading to production of digestive impurities ama. This ama gets stored in the manovahi strotas thereby becoming the cause of pain in head. Lowering of ojas causes migraine-like problems. Ojas is the essence of all body tissues and provides strength to the nervous system and body

Migraine caused Imbalances of in brain chemicals like serotonin may be involved which helps regulate pain in nervous system. Researchers are still studying the role of serotonin in migraines.

Serotonin levels drop during migraine attacks. This may causes trigeminal nerve to release substances called neuropeptides, which travel to brains outer covering (meninges). The result is migraine pain.

A number of factors may trigger migraines, including:

  • Hormonal changes in women -Hormonal medications, such as oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy, also may worsen migraines because of Fluctuations in estrogen seem to trigger headaches in many women. Women with a history of migraines often report headaches immediately before or during their periods, when they have a major drop in estrogen.
  • Foods- eged, cheeses, salty foods and processed foods and sweetener aspartame and the preservative monosodium glutamate may trigger migraines. Skipping meals or fasting also can trigger attacks.
  • Stress, Alcohol, especially wine, highly caffeinated beverages and Missing sleep or getting too much sleep may trigger migraines.
  • Bright lights, loud sounds and sun glare can induce migraines. Strong smells including perfume, paint thinner, smoke, change of weather and Intense physical exertion, including sexual activity  can trigger migraines in some people.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Fever, Diet & Lifestyle:
  • Avoid following factors

1. Foods- eged, cheeses, salty foods and processed foods and sweetener aspartame and the preservative monosodium glutamate may trigger migraines. Skipping meals or fasting.

2. Stress, Alcohol, especially wine, highly caffeinated beverages and Missing sleep or getting too much sleep.

3. Bright lights, loud sounds and sun glare can induce migraines. Strong smells including perfume, paint thinner, smoke, change of weather and Intense physical exertion, including sexual activity.

Ayurvedic treatment of Migraine, Ayurvedic medicine and panchkarma therapy are used which pacification of Pitta Dosha, Vat Dosha and restoration of digestive function in the body. Nervine tonics are also recommended to enhance the ojas, relax the mind and give strength to the nervous system.

Shirolepa – Application of herbal pastes which pacify Pitta Dosha like Sandalwood, camphor, Jatamansi.
Shiro Dhara (Pouring of thin stream of liquid over scalp)- Shiro  dhara with oils like kshirbala tail and chananadi oil 
is carried out where Vata involvement is high.
Cow milk is done when Pitta involvement is more.Takra Dhara (buttermilk) is done when there is obstruction to Vata passage is to be removed.
Shirovasti – Retaining the medicated oils over the leather cap fitted over the scalp. Any vata-pitta pacifying oils are beneficial for this purpose.
Sneha nasya – Instillation of medicated oils can be carried to the nostrils.
